Galle has now become a fascinating tourist destination where you can spend endless days roaming around the cobbled streets. Galle reached the highest of its development in the 18th century, during the Dutch colonial period. It is the best example of a fortified city built by the Portuguese in south East Asia. The renowned Galle Fort now a UNESCO world heritage site occupies an amazing collection of structures dating back through centuries. Close by Unawatuna is the moonstone blue bath tub surrounded by a reef where you can spend hours snorkeling in calm waters. There are several wreck dives around Unawatuna, as well as reef and cave diving.
